Steven Pressfield

If you don’t know who this is, he is an author and historian who the historical novels Gates of Fire, Tides of war, virtues of war, The Afghan Campaign, Killing Rommel, The legend of Bagger Vance and The war of art. Mr Pressfield is a former Marine and an honorary citezen of the city of Sparta in Greece. I read his book Gates of Fire which is a great depiction from the warriors perspective of life as a Spartan and the defense of the Hot Gates in the battle of Thermopyle (where the movie 300 came from of 1200 or so men slaying 1,000,000 invaders).

The only warning we got that he was coming was our instructor said something like ‘Some guy is coming to talk to us. I don’t know who it is but we need to be there to listen’. It turned out that it was Steven Pressfield, along with an army SOC Major Jim Gant and an Afghan Tribal leader chief Zazai. My Sgt’s course class was the only enlisted there among Generals and an auditorium full of officers. The three speakers spoke a great deal about tribal life, the Afghan governments corruption, and the strategy that is working and needs to be implemented over there. They explained how our money and efforts are being wasted and stolen right now and that the govt wants to keep a state of chaos because they are profiting from Americas donations. The fight needs to be won with the help of tribes. They unrolled a scroll that stretched the length of the stage in the front of the auditorium with thumbprints of probably 90 Afghan elders that have started a movement to ally their tribes against Taliban and govt corruption. more on them and the story here…

We possibly witnessed the first steps to a dramatic change to the SOP’s in this war. I won’t share a lot of the details because you can find them on the blog and if not they probably don’t want to share it, but I did get a picture and autograph with Mr Pressfield that I will post later on.
